Akitsu faces the Seto Inland Sea in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. I served as art director for an exhibition that explores the rise and fall of social issues also seen in suburban Japan, and asks the question, "What does affluence mean from an outside perspective?" Barbora paints while traveling around the world. In addition to works she has created to date, she exhibited 15 pieces inspired by a three-day stay in Akitsu. Based on the theme of "looking at the world from Akitsu," she attempted to create a three-dimensional experience by hanging the pieces by fishing line from the wooden ceiling of an old house, with works from Akitsu in the foreground and works from around the world in the background. She painted various scenes from Akitsu, including Akitsu's temples and shrines, power lines visible in the town, and seascapes reflecting the sunset, and says she expressed them with a sense of color unique to other countries. "For example, electric wires are not commonplace in European landscapes. They bring a sense of expectation that the town will continue, and are a guideline for the continuous town landscape created by Akitsu's unique Setouchi topography. I expressed the way buildings and landscapes from different eras come together as one of Akitsu's interesting landscapes," says the artist. In the future, Akitsu's landscape will likely become an increasingly interwoven mix of things and events from different eras. The key will be how this historical character is preserved and, at times, updated in a positive way.
