Tsutomu Yoshizaki of MiKS was in charge of creative direction for the Kanazawa Coffee Festival 2023, held in the basement of Kanazawa Station's Hospitality Dome on May 27-28 this year, and he articulated the concept through visual design, including the logo. Given Kanazawa's coffee consumption ranks among the highest in Japan, the festival was held under the slogan "We want to make Kanazawa Japan's number one coffee town!" as a way to further enjoy Kanazawa's rich food culture. In order to allow people to enjoy cutting-edge, diverse coffee in Kanazawa, we invited only coffee shops from outside the prefecture, from Tokyo to Kyushu and even Australia, but we also invited Kanazawa-based shops to participate in the creation of sweets to accompany the coffee. Speaking of coffee, Kanazawa is synonymous with it. We aim to make it that kind of city. As conveyed by the moving logo, the KCF logo was designed with the image of the aroma of coffee wafting from the basement of Kanazawa Station, and the colors of the coffee and Kanazawa Tsuzumimon Gate were expressed in vivid orange. The logo was used on everything from admission stickers, event merchandise, pamphlets, tickets, the exhibition space, and coffee cups, painting the city of Kanazawa orange on the day of the event. The eight 1800mm square standing drinking tables, wrapped around the venue's pillars, were independently produced by students from the Kanazawa Institute of Technology's Department of Architecture, after four months of meetings and studies.
To encourage the 5,000 visitors over the two days, who at one point had to wait in line for two and a half hours, to head out into the city of Kanazawa, design gimmicks were tried, such as linking the event to major local events and distributing leaflets with information on how to enjoy Kanazawa.
