Kutani ware is one of Ishikawa Prefecture's most representative crafts. We handled the creative direction and design of the exhibition space, including the logo design, for the "Kutani Tools Exhibition," which was held concurrently with the "Kutani Ware Festival KUTANism," a joint event between Komatsu City and Nomi City since 2019, marking its fourth year this year. Set in the Serabokutani building in Komatsu City, designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the "Tools" exhibition focuses on the tools used in the production of Kutani ware and is divided into five segments. Focusing on the tools of Kutani ware, we felt that lavish decoration was unnecessary. Instead, we designed the exhibition to allow visitors to experience a "Kutani ware journey" by following the five parts of the process—stone, clay, form, kiln, and painting—following the arrows on the floor. Entering the building, visitors follow the arrows marked on the floor of Serabokutani, creating an educational experience for adults and an exciting experience for children. As you progress through the exhibition following the five segments, you feel as if you have completed a long journey, and at the end, the meaning of the five triangles in the logo is made clear through the interwoven design. Kutani ware has five colors used in the painting known as the Kutani Gosai, and as the interior of Serabokutani is an ochre color that focuses on the "earth," a complementary color of the five colors, "navy blue," was selected, and each segment was designed to be recognizable at a glance.
