Set against the backdrop of Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture, which boasts one of the highest chocolate consumption rates in Japan (ranked first in the nation according to a household survey), a project to promote Kanazawa's chocolate culture was launched under the name #CTK (Chocolate Town Kanazawa). As part of the project, a drama series, "Dull-Colored Chocolat Ville," starring Niigaki Risa, was filmed to promote the culture. We were responsible for the direction and design of the entire public relations section, including the logo, flyers, and photo visuals.
Kanazawa has one of the highest annual rainfall rates in the country, which is precisely why it has such a well-established food culture. The main visual features vibrant colors spreading across a dull sky, and one of the drama's themes, "Unraveling Kanazawa's food culture," is expressed through supple curves reminiscent of strings. The packaging design for the chocolate carré, which is also used in the drama, features an abstract graphic map of Kanazawa set against a cloudy sky in two striking pop colors. Kanazawa's geography is characterized by its water-related features, including two rivers sandwiched between three plateaus and seven irrigation channels. The Asano River, Sai River, and the Shichika Irrigation Channel were given an iconic finish with overglaze varnish. The concurrent event, "#CTK SWEETS FESTIVAL and Dull-Colored Chocolatville Live," rented out the square in front of Katamachi Kirara, the central facility in Kanazawa's downtown Katamachi, for a sweets festival. The event featured sweets featured in the drama as well as original confections from confectionery shops. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, this event brought together Kanazawa residents with a sweet tooth. A live performance of songs from the drama was also planned, with a star-studded lineup, including lead actress Risa Niigaki, thrilling the audience. Since one of #CTK's causes is to root chocolate culture in the local community, chocolate packaging was actually created in collaboration with a design school in Kanazawa.
