Looking at consumption and diversity, Kanazawa, home to one of Japan's leading confectionery cultures, has a long-standing tradition of gifting sweets with messages like "thank you," "see you later, take care," and "please take care." These gifts are not simply sweet treats, but an expression of relationships that has been passed down through daily life along with the seasons and aesthetic sensibilities. Juplansa, a confectionery select shop run by a company in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, that has been in the confectionery supply business for over 100 years, has launched a sweets project called "Sweet Scape Kanazawa," which aims to promote Kanazawa's beautiful confectionery culture by collaborating with artists through sweets. As part of this project, they will be selling a new Kanazawa specialty, "Matcha Macaron Sable KINTSUGI." Our company, MiKS, was responsible for this collaborative sweets project, "Sweet Scape Kanazawa," as well as the planning and direction of the sweets and packaging design. ●About the Project For the first collaboration, British artist Molly Maine's work "Falling Rain" was used for the packaging design of the sweets, depicting the atmosphere she experienced during her extended stay in Kanazawa. The project began when Nozaki Bussan Co., Ltd., operator of Juplansa, participated in a Kanazawa City-sponsored digital nomad x local business collaboration program, prompting the company to quickly focus on the global situation and future potential surrounding digital nomads. ●About the Sweets Kanazawa, which produces approximately 99% of Japan's gold leaf, is known not only for its tea utensils and crafts but also for its beauty products, food, and building materials, making it a truly "city of gold" where gold is felt in everyday life. To express Kanazawa's unique aesthetic sense in sweets, we developed the new "Matcha Macaron Sable KINTSUGI." Matcha-flavored marshmallow cream is sandwiched between crunchy matcha sables and fluffy macarons, creating a luxurious texture. Enjoy the scenery of Kanazawa with your taste buds and eyes, along with the design reminiscent of kintsugi (golden repair). Available at the Juplansa Kanazawa Station Anto store from August 1st. About Molly Maine A London-born illustrator/designer, Molly Maine is known for her graphic travel illustrations that skillfully use light, color, and perspective, and has created many works themed around travel and culture. Since 2016, she has been working as a freelancer, continuing her nomadic lifestyle, traveling to over 50 countries and creating artwork. This confection, "Matcha Macaron Sable KINTSUGI × Falling Rain," was also exhibited at her solo exhibition "NOMAD | Perspectives on Home in a Changing Japan," held in London, UK for 10 days from July 4, 2025. Our top priority for this project was to enable sustainable collaboration and sustainably spread Kanazawa's confectionery culture. To achieve this, we turned the artwork into postcards and used a slit structure in the packaging design to allow for interchangeable inserts. We also thought that the eye-catching yellow color of the packaging would make the art cards stand out even more. By verbalizing and visualizing our respect for the local people and the members involved and incorporating it into graphic design, we hope that the gift of sweets given to a loved one will in turn connect to the next loved one. We hope to create such a wonderful chain reaction.
